Irrfan Khan Succumbs to Colon Infection; He Was 53

Irrfan Khan, 54, died Wednesday in Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. The actor was undergoing treatment for a colon infection.

A statement released by Irrfan’s family said he spent his final hours surrounded by his family. In another statement, a spokesperson said Khan was still fighting the battle. Khan is survived by his wife and two sons. The actor’s wife Sutapa Sikdar, accompanied by her two sons was spotted leaving the Mumbai hospital earlier today.

Filmmakers Tigmanshu Dhulia, who worked with Khan in Paan Singh Tomar, and Abhinay Deo, who directed him in Blackmail were also photographed exiting the hospital. Touted as one of India’s most respected thespians, Khan was battling a tumor for several months.

The Piku star returned to Mumbai just a few months ago, following his treatment in London. On Apr. 28, Khan’s spokesperson debunked rumors suggesting that he had died. Following confirmation of his death, Amitabh Bachchan took to his Twitter account expressed his condolences. Aside from that, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of India Mr. Kovind also expressed grief on the untimely demise of Khan, deeming it a loss to the world of cinema.
