Mad Max: Fury Road premiered in theaters about five years ago, but the film didn’t lack in terms of production design, costumes, or acting with Charlize Theron portraying the role of Furiosa, a powerful and strong-willed leader who frees “The Five Wives.”
Charlize garnered huge popularity and was lauded for her acting in the role. So, when reports indicating that Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller didn’t plan to get Charlize to reprise her role, fans were understandably confused.
During an interview with IndieWire earlier this year, Mad Max director George Miller revealed that the Fury Road spinoff was in the works, and will be telling the story of Furiosa. While fans were happy to hear the news, most were disappointed that the film will not star the actress who popularized the character and made it who she is today.
Charlize will not star in Furiosa because it is a prequel film that revolves around the origin story of Furiosa. Charlize can’t play the younger version of herself, so she is not in this film. Miller debunked rumors suggesting that he would adopt de-aging technology on Theron as Martin Scorsese did with the cast of The Irishman.
“It’s a tough one to swallow,” Theron told The Hollywood Reporter while expressing her feelings about the prequel, which will not feature her. “Listen, I fully respect George, if not more so in the aftermath of making that film with him. He’s a master, and I wish him nothing but the best,” she added.
“Yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character,” she said, noting that she was grateful that she had a small part in creating her. Speaking of Furiosa, the actress said she will always remember her as someone she thinks of and reflects on fondly.
Moreover, she said she trusted Miller, who decided to go ahead with the project without her, noting that sometimes people tend to get so hung up on the smaller details that they forget the thing that they emotionally tap into is barely connected to that minute thing that they are focusing on. Miller got the green light to begin production on Furiosa in Dec. last year.
The movie will tell the story of Furiosa’s origin, and she will be played by Peaky Blinders actress Anya Taylor-Joy. “The movie will track the genesis of Furiosa before she teamed up with Max Rockatansky in Fury Road,” Deadline reported.
